There is some doubt about why the hills are called The Black Mountains. One suggestion is that they used to be covered with oak trees which gave them a black appearance. If so then Cwmdu (the dark valley) would be an apt description. At the south end there are several places called Deri.

An alternative suggestion is that the best place to view the hills is from across the valley to the north near Clyro. From there the front face will usually be in shadow or sillouetted against the bright southern sky and so will appear black.
