Black Mountains Gliding Club
Trial lessons and courses
... your chance to try it
Take a flight in a dual controlled glider, with a qualified instructor. The
glider will be towed up behind the tow-plane to a nearby hill or to 2000ft
(dependent on conditions). You will fly within the Brecon Beacons National
Park, and perhaps share a thermal with a buzzard or two. You may even see a red kite - several live nearby.
The airfield is located in an idyllic setting, at the base of the Black Mountains, with panoramic views to the west.
During the 20-30 minute flight you will be invited to take the controls. Your instructor will help you understand how the controls work and you will be able to fly the glider yourself.
This is an excellent introduction to gliding.

Who can take a trial lessonThere are very few restrictions:-
On the dayIf you are travelling some distance to Talgarth, we would advise calling the club after 9am on the day of your flight, just to ensure the weather is suitable for your trial lesson.
Allow plenty of time, we want you to enjoy the whole experience and soak up the airfield atmosphere.
If the weather is suitable bring a packed lunch Soft drinks and snacks are on sale in the clubhouse which also offers tea and coffee making facilities.
Friends and family are welcome, children and pets must be under close supervision, airfields are potentially dangerous. Always follow the advice of the club officials.
Please note: No loose objects are allowed in the glider's cockpit. Only small cameras can be taken on a trial lesson flight and these MUST be secured with a wrist strap at all times.
You will be asked to sign a temporary membership form. You automatically become a member for 3 months and this entitles you to further flights at club rates during this period.
You will receive a detailed briefing before the flight.
After the flightWatch the flight operations for a while with your new understanding, maybe chat with club pilots. When you leave we hope you have enjoyed your day, and will return to continue your flying with us.
If you wish we will provide a certificate for you to keep.
Follow on trainingThe trial lesson membership lasts 3 months and further lessons can be taken at the normal club rates. During the midweek period, it is often possible to book a particular time slot to suit you. At weekends and on public holidays, we operate a flying list, and you await your training flight in turn with other members. Weekend and Public Holiday flying days are operated by club members, and it is a valuable way to see and develop new skills towards your flying career. We are able to provide long training flights far more often than any other club in the UK which makes us an ideal place to learn from the basic handling of the controls of a glider, to all the skills and experience required to fly solo, go cross-country flying, or soaring in mountain wave.
Trial lesson membership for three months is designed for people to revisit Talgarth and fly as often as they like, to help decide if gliding is the sport for them. At any time during, or after your trial lesson membership, you may wish to join the club as a permanent member. Membership forms can be downloaded
here or obtained by phoning the office.
